Underhulls - The Background

The most popular series of motor yachts ever produced from 1980 to
the present was designed by the Bayliner Marine Corporation.  As many
as 10,000 of these 32', 38', 45' and 47' motor yachts still cruise the
waters today and have an excellent reputation for great value in a larger
boat.

The Problem

With the availability of better technology, boaters today are adding more
electronics and other gear to their vessels.  The downside is that when
fully loaded, these excellent motor yachts have somewhat sluggish
performance and handling capability.  Their semi-displacement hull
was designed for economical cruising at lower speeds while a more
planning type hull is better for speeds over 10 knots.
The Solution

An aftermarket hull adaptation to actually changes the shape of the hull to a
more conventional style.  Underhulls is an innovative fiberglass mold that
transforms the older, soft chine semi-planning hull of their 32' and 38'
Bayliners to the more true planning hull design.  This hull retrofit provides the
lift to plane quicker, provide a more stable ride, better handling in all seas
and enhance the visibility at the helm.  Performance, while improved, does
vary with each individual boat.
How it Works

Underhulls function much like a massive trim tab, utilizing the length
and width of the hull to create a more natural and efficient curve
downward.  This provides the pressure to create the needed lift to
plane the boat.  Use of trim tabs to maintain a planning hull speed is
reduced and engine horsepower is restored to its primary function of
increasing forward hull speed.  The common sense application of
Underhulls changes the semi-displacement version into a true
planning hull design currently in today's production techniques.  After
the application of Underhulls to a boat, the use of trim tabs become
substantially more effective.  As always, in following sea conditions,
they should be in the up position.
